Research is proving that video games have some huge benefits for children. The video above is a TED Talk given by Daphne Bavelier, a brain scientist. In the clip she explains how video games impact children. She also dispels the myth of gaming making your kid stupid and even the one about it ruining their eyesight. If your video game parenting is predicated on these types of myths it may be best to view this video alone. And hope your kids don’t find it and use it against you.
In our household gaming is a Friday-Sunday activity. We encourage our sons to detach from electronics during the week and find creative ways to entertain themselves after their homework and studying is complete.
Let me also remind you that the gaming business is a billion dollar industry. With jobs like coding in high demand this is a great teachable moment to pull back the curtain on some of the passions your kids may have showing them how to be a contributor and not just a consumer.
What are your rules around video games and why? Let’s continue the conversation in the comments below.
